Comparing 12 Free Screencasting Tools | EDUCAUSE

Comparing 12 Free Screencasting Tools | EDUCAUSE

ScreencastingLogos

Over the course of the week, the list of Screencasting tools that have been recommended to me, or that I’ve otherwise learned of, has grown to a dozen.

I have a goal of trying identify a free tool or set of tools to use to create stand alone tutorials by combining screen images and screen motion with audio. I would also like to have some editing capabilities, so I could combine multiple captures and rearrange the order of these pieces if needed, and to be able to re-record audio notation if possible. I would also like to have screen annotation capabilities, at least for the screen captures.

Since some professors began suggesting that Twitter could be used not just as a recreational lark but as a potentially revolutionary teaching tool, purists and futurists have debated whether academe should swim against the cultural current toward limited, text-based communication, or adapt to it.

Creating brief instructional videos (and more) with Jing

Cool free app for combining screen shots or screen motion with audio, to create instructional presentations.

Jing
This week I got my Jing on! I recently heard about Jing (found on the web at jingproject.com), and after a quick visit to their web site I knew that this might be the type of tool I’ve been thinking about trying out for creating some brief instructional videos. The fact that it was free made it a no brainer to go ahead take for a spin (there is also a paid version, with a little more functionality – more on that below).

How College Students Seek Information in the Digital Age | EDUCAUSE

How College Students Seek Information in the Digital Age | EDUCAUSE

A report of findings from 2,318 respondents to a survey carried out among college students on six campuses distributed across the U.S. in the spring of 2009, as part of Project Information Literacy. Respondents, while curious in the beginning stages of research, employed a consistent and predictable research strategy for finding information, whether they were conducting course-related or everyday life research. Almost all of the respondents turned to the same set of tried and true information resources in the initial stages of research, regardless of their information goals. Almost all students used ourse readings and Google first for course-related research and Google and Wikipedia for everyday life research. Most students used library resources, especially scholarly databases for course-related research and far fewer, in comparison, used library services that required interacting with librarians. The findings suggest that students conceptualize research, especially tasks associated with seeking information, as a competency learned by rote, rather than as an opportunity to earn, develop, or expand upon an information-gathering strategy which leverages the wide range of resources available to them in the digital age.
